SMITH-HAMMOND-MIDDLETON MEMORIAL CENTER

The 3,200-seat Smith-Hammond-Middleton (S-H-M) Memorial Center is the home of the SC State men’s and women’s basketball teams. The multi-purpose facility can also be used for volleyball contests.

Erected in 1968, S-H-M is named in memory of Henry Smith, Samuel Hammond and Delano Middleton, three students who lost their lives on February 8, 1968 in the pursuit of dignity during the Civil Rights Movement.

Along with an NCAA-regulation hardwood court, three dressing rooms are located just off the playing area down on the lower concourse. A small training room is adjacent to the playing area. Press facilities and dressing rooms for visiting basketball teams are located on the upper level.

Recently, the playing surface was replaces and locker rooms refurbished. In addition, courtside press and media accommodations were upgraded and a new scoreboard for both basketball and volleyball usage was added.

The facility also houses the offices of the chairman and some staff members of the Department of Health, Recreation and Physical Education. In addition, several classrooms are located under the upper concourse.

A large stage area in the structure is used for convocations and concerts, when an additional 800 chairs may be played on the playing area. At the north end of the facility is a six-lane swimming pool with adequate seating for approximately 250 persons.
