Hermance Stadium

Home to Oglethorpe Baseball

Anderson Field is home to the Oglethorpe University baseball team. The facility was originally known as Hermance Stadium and home to Oglethorpe’s football team. The Gothic granite exterior was inspired by the Roman Coliseum and the stadium named for Harry Putnam Hermance. Hermance was an investor who funded the construction of the stadium. The original plans for the stadium were quite grand, including seating for up to 50,000 fans.

The first section of Hermance Stadium was completed in the 1920’s and the stadium was dedicated on October 26, 1929. Unfortunately, the stock market crashed three days later on Black Tuesday, which led to the Great Depression. This prevented the rest of the stadium from ever being completed. Today, the stands of the stadium are still from the original construction. Although Oglethorpe no longer has a football team, Hermance Stadium still overlooks the field, and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

In 1940, the athletic field was renamed Anderson Field after the legendary Oglethorpe coach Frank Anderson. Anderson Field features a hybrid Bermuda surface and a pro-mix infield. Other features of the field include 2,000 square foot Astroturf batting cages with three hitting tunnels, home and visitors’ dugouts, an automatic irrigation system, permanent lighting for night games, and an inning-by-inning electronic scoreboard. Anderson Field combines a historic field with modern amenities to give players, coaches, and fans a unique experience.

The capacity of the Hermance Stadium is 1000 people usually filled with students, parents,  professors, and more. The stadium is currently allowing general admission to all games. Come out and support your Stormy Petrels!
