Fishing Program

The Texas Parks Wildlife Department (TPWD) Inland Fisheries Division Neighborhood Fishin' Program (NFP) expanded to the Austin metropolitan area in 2008 with the introduction of Bullfrog Pond in Travis County’s East Metro Park. Due to the tremendous success, in 2015 the program was added to Kingfisher Pond, a 2 acre pond located in East Metro Park.

The general goal of the NFP is to provide fishing opportunities in all Texas urban areas, with an emphasis on youth participation. TPWD has partnered with Travis County parks to provide a quality fishing experience at these ponds. The ponds have excellent bank access and a state-of-the-art fishing pier. The TPWD Inland Fisheries Division provides fisheries management expertise and fish for regular stockings. The fish-stocking plan consists of bi-weekly stockings of channel catfish or rainbow trout. Channel catfish (12 inches) are stocked from April through November (except for during the peak heat during the month of August) and rainbow trout (8-12 inches) December through March. Visitors over 17 years of age must have a valid Texas fishing license.

A valid freshwater fishing license is required to fish Bullfrog and Kingfisher Pond unless you are exempt. Fishing is by pole and line only and a maximum of two poles per angler. There is no minimum length limit and a 5 fish daily bag limit per angler for channel catfish and rainbow trout.

YMCA

East Metropolitan Park also includes a swimming pool managed by the YMCA of Austin, which will manage pool operations, provide certified lifeguards, and pool programming, i.e., swimming lessons and physical fitness. The pool typically operates from Memorial Day through Labor Day. More information about the pool can be obtained at the YMCA website www.austinymca.org.
